Blackwork SAL - SAL Announcement Post

After the success of the Blackwork SAL of this year I have decided to use the Summer Mystery SAL, that I was unable to host due to health reasons, as a year long SAL instead. This SAL is full of options so very easy to make it uniquely yours. The picture above is NOT a section of the SAL - I'm keeping the patterns I'm including a secret for now. What I won't be keeping secret is the four options that you get for the outlines for the SAL - I thought it would be easier to let you baste or mark that before the SAL starts so you can add each part more easily.

Octagon grid
Plusses grid

The pattern was designed with the plusses but I added some additional versions to give you more options.
  • If you choose the octagons or squares then you will have fewer spaces to fill so you can choose which patterns to add.
  • If you choose to do the rectangles you will have some additional spaces, so you can use some of your favourite patterns a second time!
  • If you are feeling adventurous then by all means create your own shape to fill! Naturally I won't be able to show you where to place the patterns on your shapes but I'm certain you can easily adapt this yourself!
Where you place each month's patterns within the outlines is entirely up to you!

What:

  • This is a blackwork sampler.
  • The pattern is 100 stitches square.
  • The pattern is in Holbein/backstitch.
  • There will be twelve monthly pdfs with three or four blackwork patterns in them.
  • Each pattern will show how to use it within the grid of your choice.

Where:

  • All patterns are posted here on my blog.
  • There is a Facebook group to share progress and talk about the project here.

When:

  • You get the patterns for the outlines now - scroll down to the bottom for the patterns.
  • New patterns will be given every second Tuesday of the month - there will be a "calendar" in the side bar so you can see the exact dates, which will be added sometime in December
  • I will start on the 14th of January 2020.

Fabric:

  • I have rounded up the numbers working from the actual size of the stitching to make sure you have enough fabric.
  • Fabric amounts are given based on stitching over one bunch of Aida or over two threads of evenweave.
  • If you decide to stitch over one you will of course need less fabric but tbh I wouldn't do this unless you are very experienced at backstitch over one.
  • I have given 3 inches / 7.62 cm of fabric on each side for framing.
  • If you wish to calculate the fabric for yourself based on your plans then this is a helpful tool.
Size in inches:
  • For 14ct Aida/28ct evenweave:
    • The pattern is 7.1 inches square.
    • It requires a piece of fabric that is 14 inches square.
  • For 16ct Aida/32ct evenweave:
    • The pattern is 6.3 inches square.
    • It requires a piece of fabric that is 13 inches square.
  • For 18ct Aida/36ct evenweave:
    • The pattern is 5.6 inches square.
    • It requires a piece of fabric that is 12 inches square.
  • For 20ct Aida/40ct evenweave.
    • The pattern is 5 inches square.
    • It requires a piece of fabric that is 11 inches square.
Size in cm:
  • For 14ct Aida/28ct evenweave:
    • The pattern is 18.2 cm square.
    • It requires a piece of fabric that is 34 cm square.
  • For 16ct Aida/32ct evenweave:
    • The pattern is 15.9 cm square.
    • It requires a piece of fabric that is 32 cm square.
  • For 18ct Aida/36ct evenweave:
    • The pattern is 14.1 cm square.
    • It requires a piece of fabric that is 30 cm square.
  • For 20ct Aida/40ct evenweave.
    • The pattern is 12.7 cm square.
    • It requires a piece of fabric that is 28 cm square.

Floss:

  • Floss is calculated based on using one strand over one (or two for evenweave).
  • Skein amount is given for DMC floss which has six strands and eight metres long - if you use another brand you may need more floss.
  • I am giving the floss amounts for 14ct only as PCStitch doesn't give less than 0.1 skein as an amount.
Floss use:
  • 0.2 skein of DMC 310 black - this is for the outlines, which are stitched with two strands at the end.
  • 0.1 skein of 25 - 33 colours depending on which outline you decide to use, leftovers from other projects will work for most.

    1. I am indeed! Oh wonderful :D

Choices are always difficult - but at least you have plenty of time to decide :)

  2. This'll be so much fun! I'm leaning towards the rectangles or plusses, but probably won't start before the new year so I have some time yet to decide.

    1. Yes it will be! The grids are just so you can have a look at things better and mark where the shapes go, so no real rush - I didn't mark mine but just started in the middle and I'm adding the black lines as soon as both sides of the line have been filled :)

  3. I printed the rectangles, but I may change my mind again.

  4. I cannot decide, so I want to make all 4 of these in a square on 18ct plastic canvas. Is it possible to make these on plastic (aida) canvas?

    1. I don't see why not, all of them are doable on normal Aida without needing to go through the middle of a stitch so that means you should be able to get the same results on 18ct plastic Aida as you would on 18ct normal Aida :)

      Have fun stitching!
