Friday Freebie: 50 x 50 for 2019 - March

Welcome back for the third edition of the 50 x 50 pattern series! This post is a little later than usual as I was determined to finish the stitching of the main pattern today. It should have been simple and done hours ago but... the kids are home due to a school holiday and kept needing me. The reason I wanted it done is because I'm behind on my stitching schedule and knew that I'd just set the unfinished embroidery aside to finish "later" and not get round to it. I won't be stitching the alternate pattern for the same reason but I will do a backstitched square and finish finish it later this month so it's completely done.
Like in previous months you will get a pattern for each of the two options that you can stitch with this pattern. This month I went for a traditional Irish Chain Quilt pattern - it's simple to stitch but looks amazing. This month  I used Jodyri Designs March 2017 Limited Edition 18ct Aida "Dawn of Spring". The thread is "Sunlit Waters" 043R.

You can achieve many different looks with this pattern depending on how you use colours. I started in one corner and worked my way around in "circles" till I reached the end. If you use 2 colours and work them in different directions you could weave them together in a visual under/over pattern. If you Google "Irish chain quilt" you will find many ideas showing how to use colour for this pattern.

Like last month there is a difference in size due to the two stitch outer border on the main pattern. If you are making a biscornu/pincushion with both you will need to add two stitches per side extra to the alternate pattern to compensate for it. The pattern itself shows the full 50 x 50 section with the alternate pattern centred so that should help you.

I'll see you Tuesday for the next part of the Mamluk SAL!
