50 x 50 for 2019

50 x 50 is a really nice size for making patterns that can be used for a wide variety of things... pincushions, biscornu, cards, ornaments, and framed pictures - you name it, the patterns can be used to make it! The patterns for this year each use only one colour so are perfect for trying out variegated threads or speciality threads before embarking on a larger project with them.

The information below is a good place to start if you want to know how much fabric you will need for one embroidery - if you want to stitch them all on one piece you will need to use the handy tool mentioned in the fabric section to work it out as there are just too many variables for me to put it all here - sorry.

What:

  • This is a SAL to make twelve 50 x 50 embroideries.
  • Each pattern is 50 stitches square.
  • The patterns are whole cross stitches only.
  • There will be twelve monthly patterns.
  • Each pattern is given in one colour so are perfect for both plain colours as well as variegated and speciality threads.

 Where:

  • All patterns are posted here on my blog.
  • There is a Facebook group to share progress and talk about the project here.

When:

  • Patterns will be given every second Friday of the month - there is a "calendar" in the side bar so you can see the exact dates.
  • I will start on the 11th of January 2019.

Fabric:

  • I have rounded up the numbers to the nearest 1/4 inch working from the actual size of the stitching to make sure you have enough fabric.
  • Fabric amounts are given based on stitching over one bunch of Aida or over two threads of evenweave.
  • Fabric amounts are given working on the basis that you will stitch the front only and use another fabric for the back.
  • If you decide to stitch over one you will of course need less fabric.
  • I have given 3 inches / 7.62 cm of fabric on each side for finishing (for cm it's converted from inches).
  • If you want to stitch a back as well then you will need to use this helpful tool and put in the size of the fabric you are using (for Aida say you are using 1 stitch per thread) the stitch count is then 50 for each side = 100 + 10 stitches for seam allowance between the two sections = 110 stitches wide x 50 high. Make sure to put 3 for the amount of fabric for finishing and framing.
  • If you wish to calculate the fabric for yourself based on your plans or with less finishing space then this is a helpful tool.
Size in inches per embroidery:
  • For 14ct Aida/28ct evenweave:
    • The pattern is 3.6 inches square.
    • It requires a piece of fabric that is 9 3/4 inches square.
  • For 16ct Aida/32ct evenweave:
    • The pattern is 3.1 inches square. .
    • It requires a piece of fabric that is 9 1/4 inches square.
  • For 18ct Aida/36ct evenweave:
    • The pattern is 2.8 inches square.
    • It requires a piece of fabric that is 9 inches square.
  • For 20ct Aida/40ct evenweave.
    • The pattern is 2.5 inches square.
    • It requires a piece of fabric that is 8 1/2 inches square.
Size in cm per embroidery:
  • For 14ct Aida/28ct evenweave:
    • The pattern is 9.14 cm square.
    • It requires a piece of fabric that is 25 cm square.
  • For 16ct Aida/32ct evenweave:
    • The pattern is 7.88 cm square.
    • It requires a piece of fabric that is 24 cm square.
  • For 18ct Aida/36ct evenweave:
    • The pattern is 7.12 cm square.
    • It requires a piece of fabric that is 23 cm square.
  • For 20ct Aida/40ct evenweave.
    • The pattern is 6.36 cm square
    • It requires a piece of fabric that is 22 cm square.

Floss:

  • Floss is calculated based on using two strands over one (or two for evenweave).
  • Skein amount is given for DMC floss which has six strands and eight metres long - if you use another brand you may need more floss.
  • Because each month is different in floss requirements I am giving the average amounts for the first three patterns for 14ct/28ct if you are using a higher count fabric then you will need less floss (but not all that much less).
  • If you decide to stitch with one strand of floss over one fabric thread you will of course need less thread. If you need help calculating this please do ask!
 Floss use per embroidery:
  • For all sizes you will need approximately:
    • 0.5 - 0.8 skein of DMC floss as per the key for each month as it's released.
I hope you are as excited as I am to do this SAL - it will be easy to keep up with due to its small size which will mean you could do this alongside another SAL or large project. I hope to see many of you in the fb group as well as here! If you have any questions please do ask! Either here or in the fb group works (a mention will help me see the fb post!) and I'll answer ASAP!

  1. I think I'll try and use either this or the 25² one to make two cubes throughout the year. I'm super excited for all the awesome things you have thought up!

    1. Awesome! Just check out the sidebar on the right for the links for the two pattens published so far: The January and February 50 x 50 for 2019 :) The fabric needed per embroidery is listed in the post above. The thread requirement depends on which of the two options you wish to stitch and it's listed in the pattern. I hope this was helpful :)
