Weavers Birds SAL - Information and Border Pattern

After the success of last year's Weavers Tapestry Band Sampler SAL I decided to make a somewhat smaller pattern based on the same weavers draft patterns found on the Antique Pattern Library for this year. The theme this year is birds.

What:

  • This is a band sampler of birds chosen from the patterns of a weavers draft manual found on the Antique Pattern Library.
  • The pattern is 155 stitches and 291 stitches long.
  • The pattern is 21 813 stitches.
  • The pattern is whole cross stitch only - no backstitching or speciality stitches!
  • There are five bands in total with a small three stitch border between each.
  • There will be twelve monthly patterns.
    • January's pattern will be 27 stitches high
    • The rest will be 22 stitches high each.
      • If you want to do it in weekly sections you only need to do an average of six stitches in height a week! (Some weeks you won't be able to do that due to having to wait for the pattern but if you stay to that average you can keep up!)
  • The border will be given below so you can get started with that before the patterns start.
  • The pattern is given in a single colour, not because you have to stitch it that way but to make it easier for you to plan the placement of your own colours if you wish.

 Where:

  • All patterns are posted here on my blog.
  • There is a Facebook group to share progress and talk about the project here.

When:

  • I will give the border pattern now - it's at the bottom.
  • Patterns will be given every first Tuesday of the month - there will be a "calendar" in the side bar so you can see the exact dates.
  • I will start on the 1st of January 2019 - if you are able to keep up you will be finished before Christmas 2019! Admittedly life happens and so do other projects but the SAL will stay on this blog so you don't have to worry about the patterns vanishing.

Fabric:

  • I have rounded up the numbers working from the actual size of the stitching to make sure you have enough fabric.
  • Fabric amounts are given based on stitching over one bunch of Aida or over two threads of evenweave.
  • If you decide to stitch over one you will of course need less fabric.
  • I have given 3 inches / 7.62 cm of fabric on each side for framing.
  • If you wish to calculate the fabric for yourself based on your plans then this is a helpful tool.
Size in inches:
  • For 14ct Aida/28ct evenweave:
    • The pattern is 11.10 inches x 20.80 inches.
    • It requires a strip of fabric that is 17 1/2 inches x 27 inches.
  • For 16ct Aida/32ct evenweave:
    • The pattern is 9.70 inches x 18.20 inches.
    • It requires a strip of fabric that is 16 inches x 24 1/2 inches.
  • For 18ct Aida/36ct evenweave:
    • The pattern is 8.60 x 16.20 inches.
    • It requires a strip of fabric that is 15 inches x 22 1/2 inches.
  • For 20ct Aida/40ct evenweave.
    • The pattern is 7.8 x 14.60 inches.
    • It requires a strip of fabric that is 14 inches x 21 inches.
Size in cm:
  • For 14ct Aida/28ct evenweave:
    • The pattern is 28.20 cm x 52.83 cm.
    • It requires a strip of fabric that is 45 cm x 69 cm.
  • For 16ct Aida/32ct evenweave:
    • The pattern is 24.64 cm x 46.23 cm.
    • It requires a strip of fabric that is 41 cm x 63 cm.
  • For 18ct Aida/36ct evenweave:
    • The pattern is 21.85 cm x 41.15 cm.
    • It requires a strip of fabric that is 39 cm x 58 cm.
  • For 20ct Aida/40ct evenweave.
    • The pattern is 19.81 cm x 37.01 cm.
    • It requires a strip of fabric that is 36 cm x 54 cm.

Floss:

  • Floss is calculated based on using two strands over one (or two for evenweave).
  • Skein amount is given for DMC floss which has six strands and eight metres long - if you use another brand you may need more skeins.
  • If you decide to stitch with one strand of floss over one fabric thread you will of course need less thread. If you need help calculating this please do ask!
  • This pattern is perfect for variegated threads!
  • Floss use:
    • For 14ct/28ct you will need a total of 9 skeins of floss.
      • You will need 1.8 skeins of that for the border.
    • For 16ct/32ct you will need a total of 8 skeins of floss.
      • You will need 1.6 skeins of that for the border.
    • For 18ct/36ct you will need a total of 7 skeins of floss.
      • You will need 1.4 skeins of that for the border.
    • For 20ct/40ct you will need a total of 7 skeins of floss.
      • You will need 1.3 skeins of that for the border.
As the pattern isn't as large as last year's I'm only doing one size of pattern for the border. It's only four pages in landscape mode (three pattern pages, one information page). I will however continue to offer the pattern in colour and black and white so you can choose which you prefer.

Border - Black and White can be downloaded here
Border - Colour can be downloaded here

I am excited to share this pattern with you and hope to see many of you in the FB group as well as here! If you have any questions please do ask! Either here or in the FB group works and I'll answer ASAP!
